Verizon to put some limits on unlimited data

Sunday, July 27th, 2014

If you’ve managed to stay on an unlimited data plan on Verizon, you might soon notice that your speeds beginning to slow down if your using a lot of data . A limited set of customers will fall under the umbrella of Verizon’s so-called “Network Optimization” policy, which Verizon says is not throttling. The shift impacts customers in a very specific set of circumstances, according to Verizon:

Starting in October 2014, Verizon Wireless will extend its network optimization policy to the data users who: fall within the top 5 percent of data users on our network, have fulfilled their minimum contractual commitment, and are on unlimited plans using a 4G LTE device. They may experience slower data speeds when using certain high bandwidth applications, such as streaming high-definition video or during real-time, online gaming, and only when connecting to a cell site when it is experiencing heavy demand.

Are you affected by Verizon’s policy shift? Let us know below in the comments.

Microsoft trumpets Windows Phone 7 numbers on first birthday

Sunday, July 27th, 2014

windows phone 7

Happy first birthday, Windows Phone 7! One year on, and the fledgling mobile operating system has 36,000 active developers in its AppHub community, 1.5 million downloads of its Developer Tools, and 11,500 apps in its Marketplace.

Microsoft is quick to take a couple shots at competitors’ app stores, beating its chest about not re-counting tanslations of an app or “lite” apps, “increasing tonnage” by supporting apps from other mobile platforms, and not listing wallpapers as a category.

That’s all fine and dandy, but we spend a lot of time sifting through WP7 app feeds — and we’re still not seeing a lot of awesome apps on the platform. We think a few marquee apps would’ve made a pretty nice first birthday present — along with a much smoother update process for WP7 users.

How to build your own Bluetooth streaming home audio system

Sunday, July 27th, 2014

Get superior audio quality without spending a ton of money

There are a lot of ways to stream music at home. Dedicated Bluetooth speakers, like the Supertooth Disco or Jawbone Jambox work well, but because they are designed for portability they don’t sound all that great. At home, the Chromecast is cheap and easy if you already have a home A/V system to distribute the music, or you can splurge and pick up a Sonos for better sound and features like multi-room broadcasting. But, as we all know, a DIY junkie always has his or her eyes open for something better.

I’ve got an alternative that lets you not only stream music from your Android (or any portable device that supports Bluetooth 3.0 or higher with A2DP) or computer, but will sound as good as you want it to sound, determined on how much you want to spend on speakers. Realistically, you can spend $200 and have the very best audio possible while streaming over Bluetooth, or you can spend $100 and have something that sounds really good and the satisfaction that you did it yourself.

And it’s really easy to set up once you figure out which parts to buy.

IRL: Taking HTC’s One M8 for a test drive

Sunday, July 27th, 2014

The original HTC One was one of my favorite smartphones from 2013, but it was easy to see why you’d pass it up in favor of an archrival like Samsung’s Galaxy S4 — it just didn’t have the battery life, camera quality or expansion to keep up….

LinkedIn app for Android now available

Sunday, July 27th, 2014

LinkedIn for Android

LinkedIn, the ‘professional’ social network, has finally launched an Android app. The app has previously been available in beta for a while. The final version includes support for messages, as well as a new Reconnect button, which suggests people you may know based on your profile and current connections. LinkedIn for Android obviously has all the features you’d expect, making it easy to connect with fellow LinkedIn users from your smartphone.

The app lets you post status updates, view updates from your contacts, view your contacts’ profiles, add new contacts, search for LinkedIn users (this can be either limited to your contacts, or it can go through the entire user base), and respond to invitations.

LinkedIn expects to improve its Android app in future versions by adding some features that “have been heavily requested during the public Beta”.

Download LinkedIn for Android for free from the Android Market, from LinkedIn directly, or just point your Android smartphone to m.linkedin.com/android

‘Dear White People’ Trailer Calls Fox News Racist

Sunday, July 27th, 2014

The latest trailer for the satire Dear White People offers what we've come to expect given the hype surrounding the film–uncomfortable racial observations and a few well-earned laughs. The snippet also features a character slamming Fox News and, by extension, its viewers as racist.

Is the full-length trailer, released Tuesday, carrying on the Left's assault against the sole cable channel which offers conservatives a fair shake?
