Adblock Plus developer pokes holes in Mozilla’s new add-on performance tests

Thursday, April 24th, 2014

Wladimir Palant, developer of the most popular add-on in the world, Adblock Plus, is also an active contributor to the Planet Mozilla blog community. Over the last few days, in response to Mozilla’s new name and shame list of slow add-ons, Palant has been investigating whether Mozilla’s testing methods are actually accurate.

Rather surprisingly, it turns out that Mozilla’s numbers could be significantly wrong — and if they’re not wrong, the factors that Mozilla uses to tabulate an add-ons final score should definitely be made more transparent.

In the first set of tests, Palant shows that FlashGot’s position in the top 10 is probably due to a fault in Mozilla’s testing setup, and that add-ons can perform very differently depending on which operating system they’re being tested on. In the second analysis, Palant uncovers an irregularity that doesn’t seem to have an obvious cause — but it could be due to an I/O bottleneck on Mozilla’s test machines. Basically, even though performance testing of Read It Later is disabled because of a bug, it still (somehow!) manages to record a 14% slow-down on Windows 7.

Palant concludes both analyses by scolding Mozilla for going public with the performance data before its testing methods had been confirmed accurate. It definitely looks like Mozilla has been more than a little reckless, considering the importance of Firefox’s add-on ecosystem.

L.A.'s First Public Transit Used Actual Horse Power

Public transportation was slow to arrive in Los Angeles, a city whose farthest reaches were still accessible by foot in the 1870s. But as the city began to stretch out over the surrounding landscape, some form of regular, wheeled transportation around town became a practical necessity. And in the beginning, horses provided the power for that transportation.

Ted Cruz Endorses Ben Sasse, Will Attend Nebraska Rally with Palin, Lee

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

On Wednesday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) endorsed Nebraska Senate candidate Ben Sasse and announced he will attend a rally next week for him along with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Sen. Mike Lee on Friday.

“I have gotten to know Ben Sasse, and while Nebraskans have good choices, Ben is the strongest conservative voice running for United States Senate,” Cruz said in a statement. “Ben will not be just another vote in the Senate – he will be a leader in the fight to stop the Obama agenda and repeal ObamaCare from day one. We need strong reinforcements like him in the United States Senate.”

Sasse, who has surged in the race to a virtual tie after he staunchly came out against Obamacare, said that there is “no more zealous defender of the Constitution than Ted Cruz,” and it was “an absolute honor to have the support of such a strong conservative leader in the fight against ObamaCare.”

Former Nebraska Governor Kay Orr, the first female Republican governor, will also attend the rally at Scout’s Rest in North Platte, where she brought President Ronald Reagan in 1987 to campaign on her behalf. Sasse said that it “is fitting that we bring these proud Reagan conservatives together at Scout’s Rest to stand where President Reagan stood and fight for the same things he believed.”

Pro-Russian Militants Confirm Capture of Vice Journalist Simon Ostrovsky

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

A spokeswoman with the pro-Russian insurgents in Sloviansk, Ukraine, confirmed on Wednesday that they have captured Vice News reporter Simon Ostrovsky and are holding him hostage.

“He’s with us. He’s fine,” Stella Khorosheva told The Associated Press, adding, “(We) need to be careful because this is not the first time we’re dealing with spies.”

Khorosheva also told The Daily Beast that Ostrovsky is being held according to the “laws of war” because “he was not reporting in a correct way.”

Opera 11.10 includes improved power saving features

opera 11.10 battery power

Just recently, the Opera 11.10 release candidate was made available for download. It brought a handful of important feature additions — like HTML5 File API support and IMAP enhancements — and loads of bugfixes. Nestled in amongst the other details in the Opera team’s announcement is one more interesting tidbit: Opera 11.10 offers improved battery optimizations.

The timing here is certainly interesting, what with Microsoft’s recent report on how much power the top five Web browsers consume. In its findings, Opera 11 was fairly low in the standings. While we’ve not seen any new benchmarks yet, we’re curious to know whether the Opera 11.10 RC offers any significant gains.

If you’re running Opera 11.10 on a laptop, let us know if you’re seeing an improvement in your battery life while browsing!

VIDEO: Brits Can’t Name European Council President, Nor Answer 4 Basic Questions About The EU

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2014

Britons scored almost bottom in a basic quiz about the European Union, according to a new study by the left-wing think-tank Demos.

The Sun reports that only around 1.67 in four people who were quizzed in Britain could correctly answer basic try or false questions about the European Union such as: “Switzerland is a member” and “The EU has 25 member states”.

The score puts Britons above just Romania, Lithuania, Italy, Spain and Bulgaria – but behind every other member state. However, even the best scoring country didn’t do particularly well given how rudimentary the questions were. Austrians, who topped the quiz, achieved just 2.77 out of four on average.

The news comes as a less scientific poll by Breitbart London was conducted on the streets of London this weekend. The video below shows Breitbart London’s Political Correspondent Andre Walker quizzing Brits and tourists on whether they could name the President of the European Council, one of the most powerful men in the world: Herman Van Rompuy.
