A Wine Lover’s Weekly Guide To $10 Wine – A Red Blend Signed South Africa

Saturday, January 19th, 2013

It’s been quite some time since I reviewed a South African red. I don’t think I ever have reviewed a red wine blend containing the Viognier white grape, but really, at only 2% its impact must be fairly small. The Boekenhoutskloof farm was founded in 1776 in the Valley of Franschhoek foothills about 50 miles (75 kilometers) from Capetown. In 1993 the farm and homestead were restored and the new owners planted grapes. They now do Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Semillon and Viognier. While this area, settled by French Huguenot refugees, was well known for its elephants and leopards, its famous wolf trap has never held a wolf. This blend is 68% Syrah, 30% Mourvedre, and a tiny 2% Viognier. The companion wine is a Spanish Garnacha costing over 50% more.

Wine Reviewed
The Wolftrap 2009 14.5 % alcohol about $8.

Let’s start with the marketing materials “Tasting Note : Ripe and juicy with notes of black raspberry, cherry, and mulberry accented by hints of mocha and cigar spice. The mouth is silky and decadent with a wonderfully peppery finish that lingers nicely. Drink now. Score – 89. (Lauren Buzzeo, Wine Enthusiast, June 2011) ” And now for my review.

At the first sips this wine presented rich, dark cherries, accompanied by balanced acidity and light tannins. Japanese rice crackers gave it a bit more acidity but the Wasabi peas had not additional effect. When paired with slow cooked beef, the liquid responded with dark fruit and licorice. The accompanying potatoes made this drink quite powerful. Green beans in tomato sauce rendered our South African friend dark and sweet. After I added a generous amount of Louisiana hot sauce to the meat the wine expanded to meet the spiciness.

My next meal centered on a commercial chicken breast barbecued in Thai spices. Wolfie was quite pleasant, tasting of licorice, chocolate, and dark cherries as well. The side dish of potatoes roasted in chicken fat was excessively salty and its salt weakened the wine. The other side dish, Matbucha salad, composed of tomatoes, tomato puree, sweet pimento, hot peppers, garlic, vegetable oil, salt, and spices, paired better. The taste of chocolate intensified and the wine’s tannins were round.

The third meal centered on boxed Baked Ziti Siciliano doused with grated Parmesan cheese. The drink’s dominant taste was black plums. I got light acidity, but the tannins were almost absent. Fresh strawberries almost gutted this libation.

Final verdict. Price is the key. At the Internet price of $8 I would buy this wine again. But I had to pay about $14 at which point I would never buy it again.
