Internet Explorer 9 nears 4% share on Windows 7, IE6 extinction countdown picks up steam

internet explorer 9 ie9

Microsoft has shared some news about the state of its most and least loved Web browsers — Internet Explorer 9 and 6, respectively. Even with IE9 only recently exiting beta, Microsoft reports that 3.6% of Windows 7 users are now running the new browser (no mention of Vista… what’s with that?). The post also reveals that the adoption rate is almost five times what IE8 garnered in the early going.

It’s also interesting to note that there are now more than 1,000 sites utilizing Internet Explorer 9′s Windows 7 integration features — like the new desktop notification support we showed you in Hotmail.

But perhaps the best news of all is that Microsoft’s now has more than 400 partners and is generating nearly two million pageviews per month, helping to lure users away from the woefully out-of-date browser. Can the end come soon enough, DS readers?

Elbert Guillory Calls on Black Voters to ‘Send Kay Hagan Home’

Monday, October 27th, 2014

Louisiana state Senator Elbert Guillory has a message for  black voters in North Carolina: ‘Send Kay Hagan Home.’

“The Democrats have created the illusion that they are the salvation of the black community,” Guillory says in a new ad. “But who among us have they saved? In North Carolina, the poverty rate for blacks has risen to 34 percent.”

Incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) is in a tight reelection bid against Republican state House Speaker Thom Tillis.

“You see, black people are just being used, by limousine liberals who have become our new overseers. We’ve only traded one plantation for another. You are not Kay Hagan’s cause and you are certainly not her charity. You are just a vote,” Guillory continues in the ad. “She has stepped off your backs to fame and fortune and left you behind on food stamps deprived of the American Dream.”

The Daily Caller reports that the North Carolina PAC Our America paid for the ad, which, a source told the outlet, will run on television in Wake and Mecklenburg counties.

Fitbit announces new Charge trackers and Surge fitness ‘superwatch’

Monday, October 27th, 2014

Fitbit has announced three new fitness wearables today, the Charge, Charge HR, and Surge. All three devices will track your steps, sleep and more. The Charge is available today, while the Charge HR and Surge will both be available in early 2015.

The Charge and Charge HR sport similar designs to the Fitbit Force. They have all-new, textured bands, and use OLED displays to show you the time of day and your stats. The Charge HR will also track your heart rate throughout the day. The Charge should get up to seven days of battery life, while Fitbit says that the Charge HR should get up to five.

The Fitbit Surge is the real star of the show here. It combines the abilities of the Charge and Charge HR, and adds new functionalities, like you’d find in a smartwatch. The Surge comes with a GPS built in, letting you track where your workouts take you. It also has an LCD touch screen, and the ability to show you call and text alerts, as well as let you control your music. It comes with eight sensors built in, including accelerometers, a gyroscope, and a compass. Fitbit says the Surge can get up to seven days of battery life.

The Fitbit Charge is available today from Fitbit’s website and in store for $129. The Charge HR and Surge will be available in early 2015, and cost $149 and $249, respectively. Check out videos covering the Charge and Charge HR below.

Lenovo’s website lists iPhone-compatible Smartband SW-B100

Monday, October 27th, 2014

Lenovo’s foray into the world of wearable devices is set to commence with the Smartband SW-B100, which is now listed on the manufacturer’s official website. The fitness tracker was seen making its way to the FCC earlier the month, which revealed a rectangular display.

The product page for the Smartband SW-B100 shows that Lenovo is targeting a younger audience with its first fitness tracker, which will come with the following features:

  • Exercise Tracking: Steps/Distance/Calories/Heart rate, and daily/weekly/monthly data graph in APP
  • Sleeping Tracking, and daily/weekly/monthly data graph in APP
  • Smart Device Interaction: call/SMS alert reminder with number or name
  • Alert Reminder: smart clock, appointment alerts/exercise reminders
  • SNS sharing: sharing of track information to main SNS

In addition to tracking your vitals and showing notifications, the Smartband SW-B100 will be able to automatically log in to a connected PC without entering a password. Xiaomi’s affordable Mi Band offers a similar feature, although that particular wearable device unlocks your device when it is in close proximity.

Judging by the image of the device on Lenovo’s page as well as earlier rumors, it looks like the Smartband SW-B100 will eschew Android Wear for a more basic operating system, similar to what Samsung has done with the RTOS-based Gear Fit. From what is listed on Lenovo’s site, it looks like the SW-B100 will be available in blue and grey color variations, and will sync with iPhones and iPads running iOS 7.1 and above, as well as Android devices running Android 4.3 and later.

What is your take on Lenovo’s upcoming Smartband SW-B100? How much do you think the fitness tracker will cost?
