TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

Monday, March 31st, 2014

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that’s exactly what’s going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It’s a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won’t be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you’d like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register — or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

Mika a One-Woman Walking Commercial For Moribund ‘Meet The Press’

Monday, March 31st, 2014

How bad are things for Meet The Press?  The once-dominant Sunday show has fallen into a distant third place. And now Mika Brzezinski has resorted to an embarrassing attempt to revive her network's failing patient.

On today's Morning Joe, Mika managed to mention Meet The Press by name no fewer than eight times in one segment. Her argument was that MTP is the go-to place for politicians wanting to make news, and that Chris Christie had blown it by not appearing yesterday, sending two surrogates instead.  View the video after the jump.

A Budget to Reject

Monday, March 31st, 2014

The Obama administration has taken great pains to cultivate the impression in the media that the president’s 2014 budget plan is a genuine effort at compromise. According to the president’s team, if the GOP were to reject this offer, it would be a sure sign that Republicans were not interested in budget-cutting, or entitlement reform, or preventing a debt crisis — because that’s what the president’s 2014 budget would supposedly deliver.

The budget’s numbers betray a far different reality. Consistent with Obama’s prior budget submissions, this one embodies the president’s statist governing philosophy and his indifference to the urgent need for serious changes to the operations of the nation’s entitlement programs.

That Time We Tricked the Internet Into Following a Paperclip on Twitter

Monday, March 31st, 2014

Sometimes the Internet is weird. Like yesterday, when we ran an experiment to see if we could harness Twitter’s recommendation service to get 200 people to follow an inactive Twitter parody account, and the CEO of Microsoft ended up chiming in.

Arizona Students Take Selfies During Riot

Monday, March 31st, 2014

While Arizona students rioted on the Tuscon campus after the No.1-seeded Wildcats lost a heartbreaking Elite Eight game to the Wisconsin Badgers Saturday evening in Anaheim, a photographer caught some students taking selfies at the scene.

Photographer Alex Brown told the New York Daily News that “those pictures sum up the night” because there “wasn’t anything nefarious” going on until police started ordering the college kids out with riot gear.

The situation quickly escalated, as 15 people were eventually arrested after students threw sparklers and beer at police officers while officers fired tear gas and beanbags at the students.
