IRL: Wahoo’s Blue SC speed sensor for bikes

Monday, September 30th, 2013

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

IRL: Wahoo's Blue SC speed sensor for bikes

Smartphones, tablets, smartphones, repeat. We tend to come back to the same sorts of gadgets here in “IRL,” but this week we’re shaking things up with a fitness device. Associate HD Editor Ben Drawbaugh is one of the few mountain biking enthusiasts on staff, which means he was one of the only people qualified to test out a bicycle computer, something we normally wouldn’t review. After the break, find out if a $60 Bluetooth Low Energy sensor is worth the investment.

This Is A $200K Jet Pack That You Can Buy In Two Years

Monday, September 30th, 2013

p12flyingA few things come to mind at the mention of a jet pack. The Jetsons come first, and then this hilarious video, in which Fox 5 News embarrasses itself with a water-propelled jet pack. But what if I told you that we’re about a year away from the first legitimately available jet pack for sale?

In-store collection returns to the Apple Store for iPhone 5s, for now

Monday, September 30th, 2013

Demand for the iPhone 5s is high, supplies are still low, but Apple has made available once more in-store collection for online purchases. The facility originally went live about a week ago following Apple’s record opening weekend of sales, but quickly disappeared as supplies dried up once more. For now though, if you’re still trying to get your hands on a new iPhone 5s, it’s definitely worth taking a look.

Gold is still likely to be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to come by, but at least this way you can check out your local Apple Store before heading out there. There’s no telling how long in-store collection will be around this time, so act fast if you don’t want to miss out. If you manage to snag one, let us know what you got!

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian

Monday, September 30th, 2013

google voice search

Google Voice Search has just introduced localizations for Latin America, Indonesia and Malaysia, enabling native language search for hundreds of millions of users.

Google’s official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search’s polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

Get that GTA V iFruit look for your iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s

Monday, September 30th, 2013

The iFruit; a parody of the iPhone used by one of the lead characters in the smash hit video game, Grand Theft Auto V, can now be yours for real. OK, so not exactly, but you can make your iPhone 5 or iPhone 5s look just like one with a new skin available to buy in the U.S. and UK.

The skin is supplied by MobileFun, and at just 1mm thick promises not to impede use of your iPhone with any popular case. The vinyl layer essentially sticks to the back of your iPhone, ‘replacing’ the Apple logo and iPhone text with the iFruit branding seen within the game. It’s a bit of fun, especially if you’re big into the game. Pricing wise we’re looking at $12.99/£9.99

Take a look at the iFruit skin at either of the links below. What do you think to it? Too much, or the perfect GTA V accessory?

Gmail Android app may get ads soon, APK teardown reveals

Google’s Gmail app for Android has remained an ad-free sanctuary, but code uncovered by Android Police in an APK teardown of the application’s latest version hints that circumstances might change. Buried within the the program is a new library called “ads,” along with messages, functions and classes mentioning advertisements. What’s more, a “ShowAdPreferenceManager()” function routes users to the ad settings page for their very own Google account. Its not clear if sponsored bits will make it into the promotions folder just like the web version of Mountain View’s inbox, but the clues suggest you should brace yourself to see some marketing relatively soon.

How Much Global Warming Will Happen Before You Kick The Bucket?

How Much Global Warming Will Happen Before You Kick The Bucket?

On Friday the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change put its collective foot down about global warming. It’s happening and it’s our fault. But as with any issue that affects all of humanity, the most important question is what’s gonna happen to you? Will you have to give up air conditioning? Will the song "White Christmas" become completely irrelevant? Will you have to feel guilty about how your generation is leaving things for your children’s generation? The Guardian has a way for you to check.
