OK! or OMG?! Read Our Review of ‘Now You See Me’

Friday, May 31st, 2013

I've been talking all week about the new Jesse Eisenberg film, Now You See Me, and it's all coming down to this, you guys. OKMagazine.com's official OK! or OMG?! review, where I tell you if it's worth your buck this weekend, and where I also tell you a few things about the movie that you probably didn't pick up on from just watching the trailers.

Photos: Pics from Now You See Me To Get You Excited For The Movie

So go on. See what I thought about the film about magicians. Was it magical? Here's the lowdown…

First things first, let's give you a few deets about the plot. Four solo magicians (Jesse, Isla, Dave and Woody's characters) are brought together by this mysterious man in a hoodie, who tells them to put on a magic show in Vegas and pull off the biggest trick ever—rob a bank through teleportation. If they succeed, they get rewarded. Not going to tell you if they complete the task or not, just going to tell you that that's what the film is about.

Also, one thing to note, the film is not as much about magic as you probably think it is. There's a whole separate aspect to the film about heists and getting arrested and there's also car chases and fist fights, so if you're an action movie kinda gal, this is probably up your alley.

Another thing to note, the cast is insanely good. The acting was definitely good. Unfortunately though, the plot just wasn't as good. You might be confused (Morgan Freeman actually uses the word 'befuddled' in the film, which is more accurate) at what's going on because with the action aspect and the magic aspect, there's just a lot happening. So pay close attention.

Also, I felt like the film could've been funnier. Woody Harrelson's character Merritt, a mindreader, was definitely the comedic relief of the film, but the audience was lauging mostly at some of Mark Ruffalo's cheesy lines (he plays an FBI agent) and Morgan Freeman's weird statements. Laughing at, not with, though.

But? There is certainly a twist ending. Movies that end the opposite of how you think they're going to end are the best kind of movies, so in that sense, this film was amazing.

OK! or OMG?!: Sorry Jesse, I love you, but this one's getting an OK. Like I said, there was too much happening and not enough magic. Also, not enough Jesse. All films need more Jesse.

Telly launches new tablet-optimized version of its app

Friday, May 31st, 2013

New features such as 'carousel view' highlight the properly-designed tablet experience

Telly, a service that helps you create, discover and share videos on your mobile device, is launching a completely redesigned and tablet-optimized version of its app today. In an attempt to build on its growing user base, Telly is introducing a new tablet design that was built from the ground-up for the larger screen size with a few new notable features. The larger interface is easier to navigate, with extra room being taken up by "My Telly" and "Popular" feeds to help discovery. The main portion of the UI is comprised of a new "carousel view", which makes it simple to swipe between videos and browse for something interesting to watch.

Along with the new interface improvements, Telly is also introducing two new features to improve sharing. Both NFC sharing between two devices and friend tagging (by their @name) will hopefully improve discoverability and sharing between Telly users. Video is one of the main selling points for tablets nowadays, and it's important to see Telly working on improving its tablet experience if it hopes to grow its user base going forward. You can grab a download of the latest Telly app at the Play Store link above.

Today’s Google Doodle is a cute animated tribute to Julius Richard Petri, the bacteriologist credited with inventing the Petri dish

Born in 1852 in Barmen, Germany, Petri received his medical degree from Berlin’s Kaiser-Wilhelm Academy for Military Physicians in 1876. For the following two years, he worked in the Imperial Health Office in Berlin, where he became an assistant to Robert Koch.

It was there that he invented the Petri dish, a shallow glass container that biologists use to culture cells. The dish helps scientists grow bacterial cultures and identify many bacteria responsible for various diseases Read more…

Morning Joe: GOP Loses Elections Because They Don’t Listen To Me

Friday, May 31st, 2013

Say what you will about MSNBC morning host Joe Scarborough, he doesn’t suffer from a deflated sense of self. In fact, he’s quite sure that he and only he has the secret to electoral success for the Republican party. This coming from a man who has not held elective office since 2002 and ran unopposed in the very Republican Florida’s first district his last two elections.

“This is very important for my Republican brethren You don’t have to listen to me. God knows you haven’t — and you’ve lost election after election after election. You want to keep losing, you go ahead and do that if you’re comfortable with it. Apparently you are.”

Scarborough went on to warn the GOP to not make a focus on Barack Obama a major part of their mid-term strategy because the President remains a very popular figure. He drew upon his experience in 1998 during the Clinton years as an example of mid-term failure.

ASUS unveils 31.5-inch 4K monitor ahead of Computex

ASUS unveils 315inch 4K monitor ahead of Computex

Taiwanese PC maker ASUS dropped this gem yesterday ahead of Computex 2013 — the PQ321, a professional-grade 31.5-inch 4K monitor. It features a 3840 x 2160-pixel (16:9, 140 ppi) 10-bit RGB (one billion colors) IGZO panel with LED backlight, 176-degree viewing angles, 350 cd/m2 brightness and 8ms GTG response time. Beyond its Ultra HD capability, the monitor comes with built-in stereo speakers (2W) plus height, tilt and swivel adjustments. It’s wall-mountable (VESA) and only 35mm thick — according to ASUS, that makes it the thinnest 4K monitor on the market today. Connectivity includes DisplayPort, 3.5mm audio, RS-232C and, for US models, dual HDMI inputs with picture-in-picture support. There’s no word on pricing yet, but the PQ321 will be available in North America at the end of June and ASUS is expected to show the monitor in Taipei next week along with a 39-inch 4K model.

How to find and delete duplicate songs in your iTunes library

How to find and delete duplicate songs in iTunes

If you’ve got a hefty iTunes library that’s been transferred over from Mac to Mac or PC to PC, odds are you’ve run into issues with duplicate songs. It happens from time to time and as your library grows, so do the problems that come with it. For the most part, ridding your library of duplicate tracks is a pretty painless process.

Here’s how:

  • How to show all song duplicates in iTunes
  • How to show only exact song duplicates in iTunes

How to show all song duplicates in iTunes

  1. Launch iTunes on either your Mac or PC.
  2. In the top navigation, click on View.
  3. Now select Show Duplicate Items.
  4. iTunes will now display anything in your library it thinks are duplicate tracks.
  5. By holding down Command and clicking on titles (control for PC users), you can select the ones you’d like to remove and simply drag them to the trash.

It’s important to note that sometimes iTunes can confuse different mixes and slight variations that come on different albums. So make sure what you’re deleting is actually a duplicate and not a remix or version from a different album. That’s why we recommend using the exact duplicate option explained in the steps below.

How to show only exact song duplicates in iTunes

  1. Launch iTunes on either your Mac or PC.
  2. Hold down the Alt – Option key on your Mac (Shift key for Windows users) and now click on View in the top navigation.
  3. While still holding down the Alt – Option or Shift key, you’ll now notice that the duplicates option has now become Show Exact Duplicate Items. Click on it while still holding down.
  4. iTunes will now display only exact matches. Here you can weed through tracks easier than you can showing all duplicates.

Other options

If you’re still having issues or have a massive library that requires a more powerful and less time consuming option, apps like TuneUp can not only automatically clean up duplicate tracks, but also replace missing cover art and fix album titles. If you’re looking for something more slimmed down with a lighter price tag, Song deDuper is a cheaper option and available in the Mac App Store. Song deDuper allows you to narrow using several criteria and can clean out your library without the need for you to manually delete duplicates. It’s not as powerful as suites like TuneUp but it does what it says it will, and does it well.

  • $4.99 – Download Now

If you’ve used other software to remove duplicate tracks from your library, let us know what you used and how well it worked in the comments. Especially you Windows users out there!

DARPA developing muscle-controlled prosthetic limbs that can feel (video)

DARPA developing prosthetic limbs controlled by muscles and can feel

DARPA’s no stranger to bionic limb research, however two new projects under the agency’s RE-NET program focus on improving amputees’ link to their prosthetics. RE-NET aims to develop the technology that will connect artificial limbs to existing nerves and muscles. Once that’s achieved, users will be able feel with the prosthetic as well as move it as they would a real arm or leg, unlike another project focused on one-way control. Head past the break to watch videos documenting the clinical trials of both studies — the arms in the clips aren’t quite the life-like limbs DARPA promised back in 2006, but they sure are mighty impressive.

Could Chris Brown Fender Bender Violate His Probation?

Friday, May 31st, 2013

Love him or hate him, Chris Brown has a way of staying in the news cycle. He’s like a sock that you just seem to always find in the dryer — you don’t really want it to be there, but for some reason it’s always mingling with all of your other clothes. Recently it was him being back with Rihanna, but then he apparently screwed that up and starting dating some other chick. People finally got over the idea of those two being together, which was not easy, believe me. Then he started going back to his douchey ways a little bit. The biggest example is this minor car wreck that he was in. The story goes that he rear ended a Mercedes, and the two drivers decided to exchange information instead of get the police involved. That’s when the story hits a fork in the road. On one side, Brown says he gave the woman all of his information, and she went on her merry way. But then he started trying to contact her, and could not get through. They say she hung up on them when they called and won’t return their calls. On the other side, there [...]
