Google CFO says the Motorola pipeline doesn’t ‘wow,’ hasn’t heard of the Osborne Effect

Google CFO says the Motorola pipeline doesn't 'wow,' may want to read up on the Osborne Effect

Common wisdom would suggest that executives talk up their existing device lines to keep customers buying until the next generation is ready. Leave it to Google CFO Patrick Pichette to think outside the box, if not necessarily for the better. He told guests at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference that the current roster, while good, doesn’t “‘wow’ by Google standards” — it reflects the 18-month device pipeline that fell in Google’s lap when it acquired Motorola last year. As such, we won’t see the full fruits of collaboration until Google has owned Motorola for long enough to put its own spin on products. While the remarks stoke the fires of anticipation for any future flagships, they may have unintentionally produced an Osborne Effect: however advanced Motorola’s phones will be in the near term, customers may still have the nagging suspicion that something better is just around the corner.

Android 101: Adding your own custom sounds to Android events

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

Android Central

The first thing most people do when getting a new phone is change the ringtone. Depending on which Android device you own, your options for different alarms, notifications, and ringtones will vary. Perhaps you aren’t happy with the sounds that came preinstalled on your phone, or you’ve been using the stock sounds and are ready for a change. You’ve got some ringtones on your computer, and want to use them on your phone. How do you get the files from your computer, to your phone? Do you have to put them in any specific place for them to be selectable in the Android menu, and will they be listed in the same place as the sounds that came with your phone? Does it matter what kind of sound files you use? You can find the answers to these questions, and more, after the break.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

opera 11.10

The crew in Oslo keeps plugging away at Opera 11.10, and the latest snapshot build includes a number of improvements to Opera’s built-in email client — as well as HTML5-related additions.

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail — such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.

Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.

You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.

Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

Hunger Games: Catching Fire Posters Revealed

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire posters have finally been revealed and oooooh – you know I can’t wait! It looks ahhhmazing!!!   Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson look amazing in their all white ensembles posing as Katniss and Peta. “The Victory Tour with Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, winners of the 74th Hunger Games,” reads the tagline for the poster. The Facebook post also teases: “The Capitol proudly announces the victors of the 74th annual Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen & Peeta Mellark, as they embark on this year’s Victory Tour! Stay tuned to The Capitol PN for updates.” Of course Katniss is holding roses and the wedding dress that Cinna designed for her that made her the official symbol – Mockingjay. We know this is symbol of rebellion, starting when she gave Rue a beautiful send off and sign of respect in her death. In the book, when she spins around with her arms raised, she is surrounded by silvery smoke and Cinna is acknowledged for his creation with a standing ovation. This all leads up to his death for starting, or helping start a rebellion. I am so excited to see the next movie, thought I am so sick [...]

Hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy Grand

Wednesday, February 27th, 2013

Galaxy Grand.

With devices like the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note, Samsung has been an integral part of the push towards bigger screens on smartphones. But traditionally these larger, higher-resolution devices have been aimed towards the high-end, carrying expectedly high-tier price tags. Today at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, we saw a device that aims to defy that convention.

Android Central at Mobile World CongressThe Galaxy Grand is a mid-range smartphone with high-end ambitions. Its 5-inch screen and Galaxy Note-like aesthetic give it the appearance of a premium handset, though like most Samsung smartphones it’s bright, white shiny and plasticky. There’s no ‘S-Pen’ stylus to be found, but aside from that the Grand offers a fairly complete Samsung software experience. You’re getting the latest version of the company’s TouchWiz UI, which runs on top of Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. The software package even includes newer additions like multi-window support — Samsung’s method for running more than one app on-screen at a time.
