New York’s MTA subway data hits Android in beta form

Monday, December 31st, 2012

Subway Time for Android

New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority this week released its "Subway Time" app for iOS, which gives real-time updates for trains in and and around New York City. Need to know how soon a certain train will be at a certain station? That's the app to have.

Only, we use Android around these here parts. And MTA's not making an app for us. But what it is doing is making the data freely available to anyone — and we've already seen our first "unofficial" app released in beta. Subway Time for Android, released by The Holodeck, taps into that MTA data and brings a fairly functional app to Android. There are bugs. There are layout issues. But those can be fixed. That we're seeing the app ported over in just a matter of days is proof positive that we're on the right side here, folks. So break out those MTA cards and let's give this guy a go.

Dental Care Tips To Get Beautiful Smile

Monday, December 31st, 2012

Beautiful teeth help your smile look more attractive, but keeping up with dental care means taking in a lot of information on a constant basis. Fortunately, the following article is loaded with great dental health care programe you can use now. To learn more about advanced mouth care, keep reading.

Can’t stomach the idea of swishing a potent mouthwash every day? Try rinsing with plain apple cider vinegar every morning instead. Swish for about one minute before you begin brushing your teeth. Apple cider vinegar helps to kill germs, fight stains and make your teeth appear somewhat whiter than before.

When brushing your teeth, make sure you are using a soft bristled toothbrush. You may be tempted to choose a medium or hard bristled brush however, these are mush harsher on your gums and could lead to bleeding. Instead, use a soft brush and make sure you brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes.

While the common practice and belief is that you should brush your teeth twice a day, an even better habit would be to brush after you eat every meal. After we eat, our mouths are full of food which can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Brushing after meals eliminates this problem.

Think about switching up to an electronic toothbrush if you have not already. These devices are increasingly recommended by dental professionals. The reason for this is the strong performance they offer compared to manual brushing. Electric toothbrushes are able to cup around teeth and work faster. They also do a better job of cleaning the specific sites that bacteria and plaque tend to accumulate in.

If you get your water from a well, you may not be getting the necessary fluoride. To help ensure that you are getting the necessary fluoride for dental health use a fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash. These products will help your teeth absorb the necessary fluoride to promote healthy teeth.

Flossing is as important as brushing, so make sure you’re doing it twice a day after brushing. Start by holding the floss tightly in your hands, or use a flossing tool instead. Scrape up and down the sides of the teeth to remove plaque and food and get your mouth clean.

Avoid soda as much as possible if you want to preserve your teeth’s health. Soda not only contains a lot of sugar, but also contains acids which can eat through the enamel on your teeth. Thus, if you drink these carbonated beverages, you are more likely to have cavities.

Remember that oral hygiene is more than just white teeth and good breath. The mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body. Bacteria and infections that start here can spread to your heart and liver. A growing number of cancers and cardiac issues are being discovered to have their origins in the mouth.

Most people know that fast food hamburgers aren’t good for you, but did you know they can affect your teeth? The hamburger bun contains sugars, which can increase the risk of cavities, and most fast food burgers contain ketchup, which also has a lot of added sugar. Keep fast food consumption to a minimum and brush your teeth right after eating a hamburger.

Even if you’re an adult, it’s never too late to get braces. It’s important to have a smile which looks good and keeps you happy, so it’s worth it to invest the time and money into getting the straightest teeth possible. This can open doors both socially and professionally, so consider it for yourself.

When it comes to taking care of your teeth, the best thing, you can do is brush your teeth twice a day. Most of us are good about brushing each morning, but not nearly as many people choose to brush at night. When you don’t brush your teeth at night, you are allowing all the bacteria you’ve collected throughout the day to breed throughout the night.

Flossing isn’t always easy. If you have a hard time working the floss down and then back up again, consider picking up a product that is “waxed.” You can also look for a floss holder, which should assist you in getting the floss to do what you need it to do.

If you are a lady old enough to wear lipstick, use it to conceal the color of your teeth. Medium coral or light red shades of lipstick make the teeth in your smile look whiter than they actually are. Lighter shades of lipstick have the reverse effect. Even if your teeth are white they might look yellow!

Plan on going to the dentist regularly. You should go get your teeth inspected an cleaned at least twice a year. If your teeth hurt or if you notice anything unusual, go to your dentist as soon as possible. Find a good health insurance to cover your visits to the dentist.

If your gums bleed easily, don’t just put up with it–see your dentist right away! Bloody, sensitive gums can be an indication of a gum infection that requires antibiotics. Infections can spread to the teeth or to other parts of the body, so you want to get them taken care of as soon as possible.

If sparkling white teeth from a toothpaste sounds too good to be true, that’s because it is. While non-prescription whitening pastes and rinses may remove light stains on the surface of teeth, they will not produce the best possible results. Only your dentist can help you to achieve these results, often with bleach.

Visit your dentist regularly. Many people are afraid of dentists. For the sake of your dental health, you should try your best to conquer this fear. Don’t just visit your dentist when a problem arises. If you are able, try to schedule regular tooth cleanings. Regular cleanings and checkups can prevent a real problem from occurring.

Prevention is the key to avoiding expensive dental work. Most dental problems are completely avoidable when you take preventative measures. Some important preventative measures are brushing your teeth twice daily, flossing daily, and seeing the dentist for a teeth cleaning once yearly. Avoiding sugary drinks like Kool-Aid and soft drinks will also help.

What you eat matters as much to your dental health as how frequently you brush or floss or visit the dentist. Eating a lot of sugar-laden foods will leave your mouth full of rot and cavities. Try to reduce the amount of sugar you eat, and also the sugar in your drinks.

Your bad breath could be the symptom of gum disease. If brushing your tongue and using mouth wash is not enough to make your bad breath go away, you need to go to your dentist and have your gums inspected. The bacteria that develop in your gum could be responsible for your bad breath.

If you are going through the process of selecting a dentist, it is important to speak with the individual beforehand. Ask him or her about how they sterilize their equipment. While many patients forget to ask about this, it could be an issue that affects your health, so you have a right to know.

Invest in a good antibacterial rinse. Use is after you brush your teeth. If your teeth or gums are too sensitive, ask your dentist about alternatives such as Sensodyne or fluoride rinses. You should know that using an antibacterial product remains the best way to slow down gum disease and tooth decay.

Time for Gun-Free Politician Zones?

Monday, December 31st, 2012

Gun-Free School Zones have cost untold innocent lives since their implementation. And now, with so many Americans rallying behind the idea of armed guards and/or teachers in schools in the wake of the Newtown shooting, Political Media’s Larry Ward wonders why we can’t turn the tables and see how the politicians like it.

His plan — to create Gun-Free Politician Zones, so that lawmakers have to endure the same kind of unprotected status American children have to endure in public schools every day.

Here’s how Ward puts it:

Gun control advocates’ loudest voices are most heavily protected by guns. Andrew Cuomo, Michael Bloomberg, Barack Obama, Rahm Emanuel, and other gun-grabbing politicians are protected with secret service and/or security details that carry guns. If their argument is right, that guns kill people, it is more than appropriate that they disarm their security and themselves to demonstrate that they can live the way they are…proposing that the rest of [us] live.

Ward’s goal is to show how absurd it is for us to be forced to leave our children as sitting ducks in myriad classrooms across the country.

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos

Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 — and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla’s rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox’s new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we’re not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new ‘channel changing’ technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel — the value doesn’t matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you’ll be able to switch channel, but it doesn’t do anything just yet (image after the break). Here’s hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

OUYA ships 1,200 developer consoles, opens dev portal

Monday, December 31st, 2012

Begone, doubters. OUYA — the Android-based game console that shattered about 16 Kickstarter records — has shipped to developers. Some 1,200 of them have shipped to developers. And it's important to stress that these are for developers. (Did we mention anything about developers here? Because we really should.) As you can see in the video above — and can the same people who "boxed" a device be the ones to do an unboxing video? — these are limited-edition devices, with transparent plastic and bugs and other things that are going to be completely reworked before production units ship in the spring.

What this milestone represents, of course, is a major step forward for a project funded by regular folks — you and me — through Kickstarter, meaning it's kind of a crapshoot as to what we'll actually get, when we'll get it, and how good it'll be when it hits our doorstep. (And full disclosure here: Android Central backed OUYA at the $1,337 level, so we've got one of these dev units on the way.) There won't be any apps on this dev version, but the egg has to come before the chicken. Or maybe it's the other way around.

In other news, OUYA has fired up its developer portal, where you can download the developer kit, upload games and get things ready for launch in a few months. Huzzah!

Xbox Live outage temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users

Xbox Live outage temporarily disconnecting cloud storage for some users

Microsoft added a cloud storage feature to the Xbox 360 in its fall 2011 dashboard update, but today an outage has taken it offline for the last several hours and counting. As noted by Joystiq, trying to access your cloud saves is resulting in a 0x807b0198 error for many, although other parts of XBL like streaming video services and multiplayer gaming profiles are unaffected. For the moment, we were able to copy/move some of our saves from the cloud cache on our hard drive (Settings –> storage –> cloud storage) to the normal hard drive section, and access them from there. Your mileage may vary, but otherwise you’ll just need to keep an eye out the XBL dashboard status page to see when things are back to normal. There’s no word yet on when it will be fully restored, but a message there says engineers are working on a fix. We’re not missing the old “gamertag recovery” feature the cloud system replaced and upgraded, but any significant outage is certainly enough to make us think about keeping our saves backed up on a memory card in a safe place — just in case.
