West Bank Settlers Spread Propaganda Using Violent Video Games

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Israeli Propaganda Games

Using video games as propaganda is nothing new. The U.S. has been doing it with ‘America’s Army’ for some time, while Hezbollah has employed ‘Special Force’ to spread its message. But those games might seem quaint and diplomatic in the face of a series of games from Residents’ Councils of Samaria and Binyamin, an advocacy group for Jewish settlers in the West Bank. The organization has released a trio of violent shoot-’em-ups with Biblical roots and a pro-Israeli bent. The first, ‘Judah Maccabee,’ puts players in the role of a Maccabee soldier (a rebel army that took control of Judea from the Greeks around 167 B.C.) as he infiltrates a Greek camp. The second, ‘Ahab in Samaria,’ has players defending Israel from invading soldiers. ‘Ammunition Hill,’ the most recent game, puts players in the boots of a soldier during the invasion of East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War.

The games are rough-looking by American standards, with simplistic play reminiscent of ‘Doom.’ They were developed by Virtual 3D, a company that primarily traffics in archaeological software, using Shockwave (a relative of Flash). The games aren’t going to win any converts to the settlers’ cause, and will probably further put off those who are already unsympathetic. But propaganda will always have its place, and in the digital age that place is online games.

Sony Walkman Mobile Entertainment Player hands-on (video)

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

You may well have missed it in today’s deluge of Sony product announcements, but the company showed off the latest device to carry its age-old Walkman brand. The 4.3-inch handset device runs Android Gingerbread, and is still in its early stages at the moment, carrying the fairly uninspired Walkman Mobile Entertainment Player moniker. The device has an HDMI port that can be used to play things like mobile games on an HDTV. Sony seemed far less interested in that functionality than its Throw feature, however, which offers up wireless transfers to devices like the company’s Bravia TV line. We gave it a whirl, and the whole thing was rather painless, even in a setting like Sony’s booth, where the place is lousy with Bravia sets. The device, it seems, isn’t quite ready for primetime, so we don’t have any word on pricing or available yet. Check out a video of the Walkman in action, after the break.

VMAs Backstage: Five Things You Didn’t See

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Find out what happened backstage at the 2011 MTV VMAs.
By Kara Warner, with additional reporting by Matt Elias and Jim Cantiello

For all the unforgettable moments that occurred onstage during the VMAs on Sunday night, there were just as many equally amazing happenings that went down behind-the-scenes. Thanks to our VIP connections, MTV News had access to everything that happened before, after and during the live broadcast. Therefore, in no particular order, we are proud to present five moments you didn’t get to see:

Gaga’s Gentlemanly Behavior Leaves Celebs Starstruck
As is her M.O., Lady Gaga‘s presence at the VMAs was a highlight in and of itself, and every celeb who encountered her had a wide-eyed story to tell of his/her encounter. Particularly Foo Fighter Dave Grohl’s first introduction to Gaga as her alter ego Jo Calderone.

“I got to meet her for the first time tonight [as Jo Calderone],” Grohl said of meeting Gaga when he went to say hello to Queen guitarist Brian May, who performed with her during the show. “I was like, ‘Brian May, what’s up!’ and she was right next to him and I said, ‘Hi, I’m Dave,’ and she goes ‘I know who the f— you are!’ Yeah, it was rad.”

We spotted Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Britney Spears and more hanging out backstage!

Another Gaga-centric highlight occurred during one of the commercial breaks, when Gaga as the confident ladies’ man Jo Calderone (or Gago, as Twitter users tagged him last night) took a cigarette from behind his ear, lit it and smoothly passed it to Adele.

‘Jersey Shore’ Stars Make Friends Everywhere They Go
As part of the MTV family, the stars of “Jersey Shore” have become welcome additions to any and all of our awards shows. We witnessed the ladies of Seaside Heights — JWoww, Snooki and Deena — palling around with new BFF, none other than “High School Musical” star Vanessa Hudgens. Later on we spotted them crossing paths with Jared Leto, which produced the following exchange: JWoww to Jared Leto: “Wow. I’m a huge fan! ‘The Kill’ is my favorite!” Leto: “Thank you so much!” Snooki, once they had passed the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman: “Aah?” To which Jenni replied, “That was Jared Leto. Don’t you know who Jared Leto is?!”

Tyler, The Creator’s Accidental Stage Dive Sends Him Into Unlikely Arms
Immediately following their win for Best New Artist, the many members of Odd Future and their assorted entourage were trying to shuffle off the circular stage, when suddenly there was a loud noise and everyone in the audience in the right section gasped. It was clear from the commotion that a member from Future had fallen off the stage. When the dust finally settled, we saw two unexpected heroes holding frontman Tyler, the Creator up: Kanye West and Kid Cudi.

Go behind-the-scenes with Wiz Khalifa, Kreayshawn and more at the VMA Pre-Show!

“It was really hard, but [the tears] came out when I fell offstage into Kanye’s arms,” Tyler half-joked as he processed the emotions surrounding his win and his almost fall.

Jay Z And Beyoncé Celebrate Baby News
Arguably the newsiest moment of the evening occurred when Beyoncé announced that she was pregnant, with a not-so-subtle rubbing of her belly at the end of her performance. Immediately following the big moment, Beyoncé and Jay-Z were enveloped backstage by ecstatic well-wishers including Kanye West, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams. One of the sweeter of those moments was when Jay stepped outside Beyoncé‘s dressing room, to allow her some time with her female friends to gush and squeal over the news. The proud and sweet smile on his face when he did so made for our favorite VMA warm fuzzy moment.

BONUS: VMA Recap With MTV News’ Jim Cantiello MTV News correspondent Jim Cantiello does many things well, but his 60-second recaps of important events in pop culture are a must-watch. Check out Cantiello’s super-speedy recap that includes analysis of Gaga as Calderone, what gets a hard-to-impress Justin Bieber to applaud VMA performers and Beyoncé’s big announcement.

The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards have wrapped, but the real action is just getting started! Stick with MTV News for winners, fashion pics, video and behind-the-scenes stories about everything that went down. Visit VMA.MTV.com for the latest.

Cell Phone Evolution, Say Farewell to Voicemail

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Here are a few of the other noteworthy things we saw today on our never-ending journey through the wild, wild Web.

Read:

Voicemail, an Obituary

Do not leave me a voicemail. I will not listen to it. I’m going to press the corresponding number to delete your message as soon as the automated voice recording concludes. I’m going to press it with conviction, like a little boy who just won a raffle to implode an old baseball stadium.

Eve Online: Audience With The King Of Space

The best analogy for Eve is this: 1% of the time, when you take part in a massive fleet fight, or take part in some epic espionage caper or something, it is the most fun game you will ever encounter. 99% of the time you’re just waiting for something to happen. But it’s that 1% that hooks people like crack cocaine. I mean, you don’t get interviewed by the BBC when you win a WoW raid.

Skype outs Freetalk Connect-Me Home Phone Adapter, does VoIP for old fashioned handsets

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

If you’re still sporting a landline as your main connection to the outside world, Skype’s now offering a more up-to-date way to use that dusty old handset. The VoIP platform has just introduced two new products that will bring Skype-specific internet calling to your home phone. Billed as a “hassle-free, plug-and-play solution” the Freetalk Connect-Me Home Phone Adapter connects to your landline and broadband allowing you to make free calls to other Skype users as well as plain old landlines and cellphones worldwide (for a price). If you like your home phone with a little extra corporate branding, the outfit’s also hooked up with GE to offer a Skype-approved cordless, simply referred to as The GE Digital Cordless Expandable Telephone with Skype, which offers free calling to Skype users as well as “low-cost” calls to your poor Skype-less contacts. The Home Phone Adapter comes with plans ranging from $39.99 to $59.99, while the Skype phone can be yours for between $69.99 and $89.99. Both are now available at the source link below, and full PR awaits you after the break.

Pastebin updated to V3, releases Windows app

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

pastebin

Pastebin is a very popular website aimed at coders and other nerdy types, which allows them (or should I say, us) to paste and share snippets of code with lovely syntax highlighting.

It has recently undergone a major overhaul which includes the release of a brand new Windows client. The new client lets you create new “pastes” and manage your existing ones. It joins a host of other tools from Pastebin, such as the Google and Chrome extensions, OS X widget and the mobile apps.

If you’re currently using Pastebin, the new client is a great addition. And if you haven’t tried it before, next time you have a piece of code you want to share or get some feedback on, you could do worse than try out Pastebin.

[Thanks, Jeroen!]
