Chomp May Have Just Solved The Nightmare That Is Android App Search

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Regardless of what you think about the Android platform, there’s no denying that the Market experience for finding apps is pretty poor. And that’s putting it nicely. Google has evolved the experience over the years, but even with Gingerbread, it’s far from great. Today, Chomp, the app search engine, launches an experience for Android that is great. If you’ve heard of Chomp before, it was likely from their iPhone app, which focused on not only search but also personalized recommendations. But with the Chomp for Android experience, co-founderĀ Ben Keighran decided they wanted to strip the service to its core, based on the usage patterns they’ve seen on both the iPhone and the web.

Monday, February 28th, 2011

In his former career, Rep. Michael Grimm investigated organized crime and Wall Street. Now, he says his FBI background will help him fit right into the 112th Congress. His ability to find commonality among those who seemed to have none, he says, will help him on the polarized Capitol Hill.

UFC 127 Press Conference Video

Monday, February 28th, 2011

by Michael David SmithMarshall Zelaznik and several UFC fighters will speak at the UFC 127 press conference. The press in Australia will get a chance to question UFC UK president Marshall Zelaznik and more at the UFC 127 pre-fight press conference, and we’ll carry the video live here at

The press conference in Australia will be particularly interesting because the media down under haven’t completely accepted mixed martial arts: Don’t be surprised if White, B.J. Penn and Jon Fitch face some questions about whether MMA is brutal, savage and unfit for polite society.

The press conference begins at 7 PM ET on Tuesday (which is actually Wednesday morning in Australia) and the video is below.

Senator Chuck Schumer Calls for Safer Public Wi-Fi

Monday, February 28th, 2011

Chuck SchumerOur senior U.S. senator here in New York, Chuck Schumer, has called on major websites like Amazon and Twitter to leave behind the less secure HTTP protocol and switch over to an encrypted HTTPS. As we’ve mentioned before, HTTPS is a much safer way to pass information across the Web, especially when using public Wi-Fi hotspots like those found at your local Starbucks. As more people use publicly accessible Wi-Fi, security and indentity theft have become a growing problem. Schumer said that shopping sites and social networks must move quickly to switch to HTTPS, and called HTTP “a welcome mat for would-be hackers.”

Publicly downloadable utilities like Firesheep highlight how easy it is to simply snatch valuable information out of the air on hotspots. A shift to HTTPS would not be a magic bullet, but it would go a long way towards securing personal data on public connections.

Insidia is a dark-yet-forgiving platformer — Time Waster

Monday, February 28th, 2011

So you’re an alien, tooling around in free space in your little spaceship… when suddenly, disaster strikes! Your craft is hit by a meteor, and you’re forced to crash-land on an unfamiliar, dark planet.

That’s where Insidia starts off. Now that you’re on the planet, you have to navigate its complex maze of rooms and corridors in search of repair kits for your craft. Once you find all ten repair kits, you’d be able to leave the planet (and win the game).

Unlike many other platformers, Insidia is not linear. As you progress through the game, you reveal more and more passages and rooms, but you also go through some places more than once. When you hit M you get a nice map that shows everywhere you’ve been so far and gives you a sense of how much is still to be explored.

As you walk around, you find items that improve your abilities (a double-jump power-up, for example). And when something kills you, you just respawn at the last “save point”, with all of your items and abilities intact. I love that, because it means dying is not a big deal – it’s just a part of the game, and it doesn’t make you feel like you’re failing.

All in all, this is a platformer I could certainly spend some time with.

Jeff Fisher to Assist NFL Competition Committee as Consultant

Monday, February 28th, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS — Jeff Fisher won’t likely be coaching in the NFL next season, but he will remain high profile.

Fisher, who parted ways with the Tennessee Titans shortly after the 2010 NFL season, has been asked by the league to assist the prestigious Competition Committee as a consultant. Fisher told Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean he had accepted the offer.

Fisher had served as the committee’s co-chairman with Falcons president Rich McKay.

“I wanted to have an opportunity to stay involved,” Fisher said Sunday. “I am very close with all the members on the committee and the support staff. You can imagine the time we’ve spent together over the years, it’s almost been like a second job. To be able to continue to participate, it is exciting to me.”

Intel outs SSD 510 Series with 6Gbps SATA interface, 500MBps transfer speeds

Monday, February 28th, 2011

We didn’t think the previous generation of SSDs, topping out at around 280MBps read speeds, were in any way hampered by their celerity, but Intel’s bringing the future to us whether we like it or not with its new 510 Series SSDs. These Marvell-controlled flash storage drives will zip data to your processing unit at a rate of 500MB per second and write anything you send back at a clip of 315MBps. That’s mostly thanks to the 510 being one of a new breed of consumer SSDs with a 6Gbps SATA interface, which has effectively removed a bottleneck from the performance equation and uncorked the extra vroom now contained within. When bought in bulk, a 250GB SSD 510 will cost you $584, while the slightly slower (450MBps read, 210MBps write) 120GB model will set you back $284. Full press release after the break.
