YouTube Trends launches, now even easier to be virally hip

YouTube Trends dashboard

Have you ever wanted to be in at the beginning of a viral YouTube trend? Well, now’s your chance, thanks to YouTube Trends.

There are two parts of Trends: a website (which is actually a rather fancy blog), and the Trends Dashboard. The website shows you currently-trending videos (it picks out four new videos at 4am and 4pm every day), and also offers more in-depth contextual analysis of the streaming video universe.

The Trends Dashboard is a totally different beast. It lets you see which videos are trending in a specific demographic, with the ability to sort by location (US state, or country), age group, and sex. Immediately, you can see that Lego Black Ops is very popular with those between 13 and 17, but that adults are currently digging the Metrodome Roof Collapse.

If that wasn’t cool enough, you can do a side-by-side comparison of up to three different demographics. There are some shocking differences, even between the east and west coast of America; while the teenage girls of Atlanta are loving Bruno Mars, those in Los Angeles are into Justin Bieber. If you’re into other cultures — if you’re a Japanophile, for example — you could also use this tool to find videos that are right up your alley.

ION plans on airing the ‘Ultimate Fighting Challenge’

Friday, December 31st, 2010

As Cofield mentioned earlier today, the preliminary fights for UFC 125 will air on ION, a cable network that seems to be fond of infomercials, "The Ghost Whisperer" and "Without a Trace." Also, according to my Comcast menu, they’re airing "Ultimate Fighting Challenge," which will be sandwiched between "Timecop" and "Space Cowboys."

Yikes. Who wants to be the one to tell them that they actually signed a deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship

The move is curious, because in the UFC and WEC’s past television partnerships, the brands made sense together. Spike is focused on the male demographic, while Versus already had a full slate of sports programming.

ION, on the other hand, "focuses on general entertainment for adults 25-54." Its programming screams, "We don’t want to offend anyone!" How will the average Jennifer Love Hewitt fan react when she tunes to ION, hoping for "Ghost Whisperer," and happens upon a slugfest between Marcus Davis and Jeremy Stephens?

UK and French carriers working on cellular coverage for Channel Tunnel, aim to finish by 2012 Olympics

Friday, December 31st, 2010

If you live in a technophile city like Taipei, you’ll have been enjoying underground 4G for a long time now, but in London the rule is that you have to bid adieu to your mobile connectivity when diving into a tunnel. The city’s Mayor has been active in encouraging (forcing?) the major British carriers to install the necessary equipment to provide coverage on the Tube, and now we’re hearing that ambition has stretched beyond the nation’s borders as well. The Daily Telegraph reports that Vodafone, O2, Everything Everywhere, and Three from the UK along with Orange, SFR and Bouygues from France have agreed to share the cost of putting together a £20 million ($30.8m) project for making cellular coverage possible while traveling through the 31.4-mile Channel Tunnel between the two countries. The goal is to get things up and running by the Olympics in 2012, though we’ve no indication as to what speeds those wireless data transfers will reach. Still, having some bars is better than none, right?
