Sony’s 13.3-inch Digital Paper prototype sports E Ink’s Mobius flexible display, we go hands-on (video)

DNP Sony's 133inch Digital Paper prototype sports E Ink's Mobius flexible display, we go handson

Sony’s new e-ink prototype is getting the test-drive treatment at Japanese universities, but SID provides a perfect opportunity to give the North American market a demo. We found the Digital Paper slab parked at E Ink’s booth — fitting, as the company’s new Mobius flexible display is the device’s biggest selling point.

At 13.3 inches, the panel is larger than your typical e-reader’s, but it weighs just 60 grams. That light footprint comes courtesy of E Ink’s TFT tech, which allows for larger, more rugged devices without the extra weight. The Digital Paper’s form factor matches the size of a sheet of A4 paper, and the on-board digitizer lets users scrawl notes on the electromagnetic induction touchscreen. Naturally, this is just one implementation of the E Ink’s display, but it’s neat to see a prototype in action nonetheless. Head past the break to do just that.

Hands-on with LG’s 5-inch flexible plastic OLED display at SID (video)

STUB Eyeson with LG's 5inch flexible display at SID

You can’t blame us for rushing to see LG’s flexible OLED HD panel here at SID. First announced earlier this week, the 5-inch display sports a plastic construction, which allows it to be both bendable and unbreakable. Most alluring of all, though, is LG’s intimation that the screen tech will debut in a smartphone by the end of this year. Before we get lost in thoughts about a tricked-out Optimus G, let’s take a look at this early prototype.

The panel is made of plastic substrates, which are both more flexible and cheaper to manufacture than their glass counterparts. In fact, cost-effectiveness seems to be the chief objective overall. Clumsy consumers will benefit as well — in a smartphone, the glass above the screen could break, but the OLED panel would stay in tact, resulting in lower repair costs. At the company’s booth, a demo area let attendees take a hammer to the standalone display and twist it every which way — sure enough, it withstood these torture tests. In our hands, the 5-inch screen was lightweight and responsive to twists and bends; it felt like a thick film strip.

An LG rep told us the panel could sport a bigger or smaller size when it debuts in a smartphone later this year. And though the prototype on display here today was labeled merely as “HD,” we’re sure that resolution could be adjusted as well. For now, get an early look in our video after the break.

Google Glass Year In Review

Written on May 21, 2013 at 6:26 pm, by Support scp.bfreesystem.com click here Learn More scp.igetpaidtodrinkcoffee.com

glassphotoIt’s been a little over a year since Google started teasing something it called “Project Glass.” The futuristic, wearable computer that would change the way that you interact with the world was nothing more than a series of rumors for months before it was “formally introduced” in April 2012. Not known for hardware and not having a current bonafide physical device that was popular among consumers, many opined that this was Google’s way of begging for attention. It might have been, and it definitely worked. In 13 months, Glass has gone from Star Trek fantasy to reality. It’s been quite the whirlwind of activity. The “wearable computing” age is upon us, and it’s been widely reported that Apple was working on a watch, therefore many assumed that Google was working on a similar device to keep up. This was not the case and Google’s co-founder Sergey Brin took special interest in the Glass project and has been leading the charge going back to when the prototype weighed about eight pounds in August 2011. Let’s take a stroll down memory lane, because a lot has happened over the past year in Glassland. It’s real(ish) The video from Google itself got sent people’s imaginations into overdrive. It was called “One day…” and gave us a glimpse into the life of a daily user of what Google had up its sleeve. We now know that the “One day…” reference had more to do with what the product could become, not what it would be in its first iteration: The user experience in this video is aspirational at best, as the current iteration of Glass is more of a complement and utility to your day, rather than the augmented reality “enhancer” as this video demonstrates. Still, the elements that make Glass handy are all there, taking calls, getting directions and taking pictures from a new point of view. Immediately after the video, and public admonishment that the project was real, the press wondered out loud if Apple should compete and that other companies should stand up and take notice. We also now know that the rumored final name for the device, Google Eye, isn’t likely. Good thing, because it sounds way creepier than Glass. We’ll get to more “creepiness” later. It was clear that Glass was getting a lot of attention, both positive and negative, from the start. Even Jon Stewart did a parody

Grooveshark gets kicked out of the Android Market

Written on May 21, 2013 at 12:51 pm, by Support scp.bfreesystem.com click here Learn More scp.igetpaidtodrinkcoffee.com

Grooveshark logoGoogle has removed Grooveshark from the Android Market. The move, which comes many months after Apple kicked the music app from its App Store, has to do with (what else?) accusations from several top music labels that Grooveshark violates copyright law.

It’s unclear whether Google plans to also remotely remove the app from Android smartphones on which it’s already been installed, something that Google has the power to do but has only in the past used to get rid of malware-ridden apps.

In response to questions regarding Grooveshark’s removal from the Android Market, a Google spokesperson only had this to say: “We remove apps from Android Market that violate our terms of service.” The spokesperson did not mention what violations Grooveshark has committed in relation to the Market’s terms of service. Google has also, understandably, not said anything about this happening in response to pressure from the music industry — yet what else could have triggered this removal?

In an interesting coincidence, Google is set to outline its anti-piracy efforts before the House of Representatives’ Judiciary committee today. Google has been accused numerous times that it profits from piracy by allowing ‘pirate’ sites to post Google ads. The company is expected to deny this as well as issue a tougher stance on piracy at today’s hearing.

As for Grooveshark, it looks like it’s quickly running out of mobile app stores on which it’s allowed to exist. Do consider however that you’ll probably still be able to get the Android app from Grooveshark directly — since (unless you have an AT&T Android device) Android does allow you to install apps that don’t come from the Market.

Ahead of their feature in the summer issue of Martha Stewart Weddings, Donald Faison and CaCee Cobb shared a video from their star-studded ceremony in December.

The fun-loving couple’s personalities really shined as they goofed around in photoshoots, put on costumes, and got down on the dance floor.

Famous faces attending the nuptials were CaCee’s bestie Jessica Simpson and sister Ashlee, Donald’s pal Zach Braff, and his “Clueless” costars Breckin Meyer and Stacey Dash.

With a belly full of southern fare, including fried chicken, collard greens, and sweet potato pie, the “Scrubs” star did the worm on the dance floor to the bluegrass sounds of the Get Down Boys. Martha Stewart Weddings hits newsstands on June 3rd.

How to Help Victims of Midwest Tornadoes

Written on May 21, 2013 at 7:05 am, by Support scp.bfreesystem.com click here Learn More scp.igetpaidtodrinkcoffee.com

You can donate to the Red Cross by texting REDCROSS to 90999 or at RedCross.org.  A good Twitterfeed to watch for updates is @RedCrossOKC.

From the RedCross.org:

WASHINGTON, Monday, May 20, 2013 — The American Red Cross is helping people in the Midwest with shelter, food, relief supplies and emotional comfort after tornadoes over the weekend destroyed homes and left thousands without power.

As many as 26 tornadoes were reported in Oklahoma, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa, according to the National Weather Service. Hardest hit is Oklahoma, where severe tornadoes ripped through several counties, destroying or damaging hundreds of homes and leaving as many as 35,000 in the dark. The Governor declared a state of emergency in 16 counties. The Red Cross is supporting first responders and is providing shelter, food, distributing relief items and clean-up supplies and working with local and state officials to ensure people get the help they need.

The Red Cross is also helping in Kansas, Iowa and Missouri, where storms left more than 71,000 people without power. Meanwhile, the response continues following last week’s tornadoes in Texas, where the Red Cross is still operating shelters and providing food, relief items as well as health and mental health services.
